SOEP Program Overview

SOEP-funded programs compliment those offered by PTA and the district by focusing on more specialized academic enrichment opportunities.  District funds are very limited and must be focused on core subject programs that provide a foundation in reading, writing, math and safety.  PTA funded programs build upon the district’s foundational curriculum with general enrichment programs that serve the school’s entire student body in areas such as science and the arts.

The specialized programs funded by SOEP extend the endeavors of district and PTA funds even further with programs such as:

Classroom Computers Classroom Music
Band & Choir
Science
Astronomy Night
Classroom Art
Fine art assemblies
Educational Software

Classroom Technology

Computers, communication and information technology surround us as essential tools in our daily lives. Learning to use computers as a general tool and using computers to enhance the learning process through educational applications has become a standard scholastic requirement.

Keys to the successful integration of computers into the classroom environment are:

  • Up-to-date computers that work reliably so that teachers don’t waste time as technicians
  • Trained staff for teaching and technical support
  • Software Applications that support classroom goals

SOEP supports Silver Oak School’s technology efforts through extensive funding for computers and staff training. This program provides the highest compliment to the educational software that is selected and funded by the school district.

Art Programs

SOEP sponsors the "Arts Attack" program for k-3rd graders and a program for 4th-6th graders led by the San Jose Museum of Art. Both programs include classroom art appreciation and artistic development activities, as well as a school-wide art exhibition each spring.

Young people who participate in the arts for at least three hours on three days each week through at least one full year are:

  • 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement
  • 3 times more likely to be elected to class office within their schools
  • 4 times more likely to participate in a math and science fair
  • 3 times more likely to win an award for school attendance

Music Programs

SOEP funds various music programs throughout the year, providing hands-on music education for all students. Programs include:

  • Band and choir
  • Hands-on music education with Matt Powell (grades 1 - 6) and James Henry (Kindergarten)
  • Additional assemblies

Studies have shown that children who were given music instruction improved their spatial-temporal reasoning and music is a key focus for SOEP.

Science Programs

SOEP’s commitment to science can be found in our grants for hands-on science education in the classroom as well as the very popular Astronomy Night.

  • Science education: Provided in conjunction with the Discovery Channel, SOEP funds additional science education in the classroom, extending the text-based instruction with hands-on experimentation.
  • Astronomy night: In conjunction with Lawrence Livermore, SOEP sponsors an evening of celestial viewing to inspire and educate. Check out the calendar of events for more detail.
